Cops and Robbers Presents: Kurws | Handle | Nape Neck
September 11 @ 7:30 pm - 11:00 pm$5 – $7
Not one to be missed, frenetic weirdo clatterings from Poland, vibes of The Ex but pushed through a No-Wave sieve.
(the) Kurws was founded in May 2008 as an unexpected consequence of the ping pong session. Since then, they have been searching together, not so much in areas of a particular genre, but at the root of rock “material”, expression and sounds. It is a workshop where improvisations intertwine with compositions that are a frozen record of the process of their creation. By means of repetition, recombination, variations and contrasts they play with memory and expectations. Post punk, krautrock, rock in opposition, funk, no wave – ways of playing, motifs, riffs, which we have heard more than once, are presented in completely different contexts – here they are prepared from the original environment, placed next to each other, used in a new way, subjected deconstruction and specific distillation.
Fresh from festival season, these lot bang it out every time, jolting shattering cracking / smoothed and bounding / punctuated. Compact post no funk no wave from Manchester, frenetic jams for frenzied forms.
Nape Neck is two thirds of Beards and one half of Guttersnipe. Callously acerbic guitars punch holes through the rotating drum of asymmetric rhythm machinery. Clawing and scraping away and vibrating at your flesh cones until you must dance or leave. Post-Punk-Leeds-Wave.
