A Headless Horse | Cavalcades | Dean McPhee
November 22 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm£5
A Headless Horse recorded their debut release at Armley’s Greenmount Studios in July 2019. With vocal harmonies and patient songcraft that take cues from 90s ‘slowcore’ and shoegaze influences like Low and Slowdive, the band also blend the heavier elements of post-rock into their sound, which has drawn comparisons with Mogwai, Cranes, Emma Ruth Rundle and The Cure. Their new double-A side, ‘Belong / The Moon Into Blood’ spans the polar extremes of their material, from soaring waves of guitar and synth to starkly isolated vocals, while lyrically exploring themes of loss and displacement. Cavalcades released their second full-length album, Let Yourself Expire, in September, furthering their shift from hard-touring screamo band towards a more expansive sound that retains their addictive melodic hooks while adding shimmering layers of guitar with poetic vocal stylings. Dean McPhee plays a Fender Telecaster through a valve amp and effects pedals, combining clean, chiming melodic lines with deep layers of delay and echo. A self-taught musician, Dean has a unique style of playing which draws together influences from British Folk, Dub, Kosmische, Post Rock, Mali Blues and Modal Jazz.
